A bilingual engineer can be the practical choice where the communication is informal, limited in scope and close to their own area of responsibility. They are particularly useful when the conversation is not a formal interpretation assignment and no critical decision depends on every phrase being transferred. Their technical credibility can also build trust between teams. There is no reason to bring in an interpreter for every short conversation simply because two languages are present.

However, this approach works only if boundaries are clear. The bilingual engineer should not be expected to interpret formal instructions, safety-critical content, legal commitments or specialist discussions beyond their discipline.
