Each conversation can contain terminology that has a precise meaning within a particular system, process or discipline. “Isolation”, “interlock”, “bypass”, “acceptance test” and “root cause” cannot be interpreted loosely. The correct equivalent may also depend on whether the discussion concerns electrical work, process safety, automation, mechanical maintenance or quality control.
The cost of an error is rarely limited to an awkward meeting. It can mean rework, delayed handover, equipment damage, failed training, non-compliance or an unsafe action taken by someone who believed they had understood the instruction. What engineering meeting interpretation involves
Technical interpreting is not the simple replacement of one word with another. The interpreter must understand the speaker’s intended technical meaning, identify the relevant terminology and deliver it immediately in a form the other party can act upon.
In most operational meetings, this means consecutive interpretation. The speaker pauses after a short section, allowing the interpreter to relay the message accurately. This approach suits site walks, toolbox talks, training sessions, audits, project reviews and troubleshooting discussions because participants can ask questions and confirm understanding as the conversation develops.
Simultaneous interpretation may be appropriate for larger conferences, investor presentations or formal events where time is limited and the audience needs continuous delivery.
